Limb Removal in South Ontario
Removal of individual large limbs that are dead, broken, hanging, or interfering with structures. The step up from light pruning when a single limb is the problem.
Sometimes a tree is fundamentally healthy but one or two limbs have become a problem. A branch left hanging after a storm, a limb growing onto the roof or into the lines, a heavy dead leader that is shedding wood over the driveway. Taking out those specific limbs is less involved than taking down a whole tree, and it solves the immediate hazard without removing a tree that is otherwise fine.
This is targeted, careful work. For limbs over a structure we set rope and a lower line and bring the wood down in controlled sections, so nothing drops where it should not. The final cut is made clean at the branch collar so the tree can close the wound and heal properly. A limb that is torn off or cut badly leaves an open wound that invites decay, which is exactly what good removal avoids.
A quick safety note. If a limb is touching or near a power line, leave it alone and call your utility. The same goes for limbs that are under tension or partly suspended in the canopy. Those are dangerous to approach, so let us assess them rather than risk it yourself. Most limb removals are a same-day or next-evening job once we have looked at it.
How it works
- Look at the limb, the tree, and what is underneath, then identify safe rigging points
- Confirm nothing is in or near a power line before any cutting starts
- Set rope and a lower line for any limb hanging over a structure or target
- Section the limb from the tip back so the wood stays under control the whole way down
- Make a final clean cut at the branch collar so the tree can heal and resist decay
- Chip or haul the wood, then clean up the site so the yard is left tidy
Good for
- Storm-damaged, broken, or hanging limbs (often called widow-makers when suspended in the canopy)
- Dead leader branches and deadwood that are dropping pieces below
- Limbs over the roof, garage, deck, fence, pool, or driveway
- A single problem limb on an otherwise healthy tree
- Branches rubbing against the house, a wall, or another structure
- Limbs that have developed a crack or a weak V-shaped union and could fail
- Low or awkward branches blocking access, a path, or a sightline
When to do this work
Dead, broken, hanging, and storm-damaged limbs can be removed at any time of year. You do not have to wait for the dormant season when a limb is a hazard, since leaving a cracked or suspended branch in the canopy is the bigger risk. The one species to flag is oak. To reduce the risk of oak wilt, oaks should not be pruned or wounded during the growing season, so for non-urgent oak limb work we schedule it for the dormant window (roughly November through March). If an oak limb breaks in a storm during the warm months and has to come down for safety, that is the recognized exception, and the fresh wound can be treated to make it less attractive to the sap beetles that spread the disease. After a storm, the safest move is to clear small fallen branches from the ground, photograph the damage for your insurance, stay well clear of anything near a power line or under tension, and let us handle the limbs that are up in the tree.
